Amethyst - Reception
Class Teacher - Ms Kemp
Following a whole-school election, the children decided to name this year's classes after gems and precious stones. Amethyst is a semiprecious stone and is the traditional birthstone for February. It is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewellery. The origin of its name is Greek and it means "intoxicate" - a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.
