Following a whole-school election, the children decided to name this year's classes after gems and precious stones. Onyx is the mystical birthstone for the month of December and the birthstone for the Zodiac sign of Leo. It is a form of quartz which is mined in Brazil, India, California and Uruguay. It has a fine texture and black colour. Some onyx displays white bands. The origin of the name onyx is Greek and means nail or claw. Legend says that one day, while the Goddess Venus was sleeping, Cupid cut her fingernails and left the clippings on the ground. Because no part of a heavenly body can die, the nails turned to stone which later became known as onyx.
