Learning at Gordon Primary School is broad with a wide range of engaging experiences to reinforce key concepts in every subject; it is balanced so that children get a full and rich curriculum containing all of the subjects and it is implemented well so that children remember in the long term what they have been taught. We place priority on the children’s personal, social and emotional development because we know that is key to a successful school career and life more generally. Every child receives a full and rich curriculum with all of the subjects. We believe this engages and meets the needs of all children and we value success in non-core subjects as highly as we do the more traditional academic subjects.

This term we will be working on the following topics:

 

English         

Our focus texts will be The Explorer and Macbeth. We will be considering how authors have developed characters and settings. We will be writing narratives describing our own settings, characters and atmospheres using expanded noun phrases to add detail and precision. We will use dialogue to reveal character and move the action on. The children will be assessing the effectiveness of their own and other’s writing and propose changes to vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to enhance effects and make the meaning clear. We will be writing playscripts, newspaper articles, poems and diaries. We will be identifying the audience and purpose of the writing, selecting appropriate form and using similar writing as models for our own. We will continue to revisit and incorporate new grammar into our English lessons.

 

Maths           

We will be using the Maths No Problem scheme to support our mathematical learning. This term we will be working with decimals. To begin with, we will read and write decimals using Base 10 materials before moving on to dividing and multiplying decimals by 1-digit numbers with no regrouping or renaming. We will then write fractions as decimals using division and pictorial methods before looking at multiplying fractions which involve some regrouping and renaming by 1-digit numbers. We will then move on to multiplying and dividing decimals by 2-digit numbers, which involves regrouping and renaming, using a variety of methods and strategies, including: number bonds, the worded method (writing down a problem in words and numbers), long division and the column method.

We will then focus on converting units of measurement using fractions and decimals. We will begin by converting units of length and distance followed by exploring units of mass, volume and time. Our final chapter of Workbook 1 will focus on solving complex word problems using the four operations and bar model diagrams.

To start Workbook 2, we will be exploring how to calculate percentages of numbers and quantities. We will be learning about how to solve percentage change and use percentage to compare amounts. We will then move on to ratios and will be comparing quantities, including numbers, objects, fractions and mass before moving on to solving word problems.

 

Science       

We will be studying one science topic this term. In Evolution and Inheritance, we will build on the children’s learning from the Animals including Humans and Living Things and their Habitats units. We will learn about variation and adaptation. We will explore how both Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace separately developed their theories of evolution and will examine the scientific evidence from plants and animals that has been gathered to support the theory of evolution.

 

Geography 

In our Rainforests topic, we will take a close look at the mysteries of tropical rainforests, from the layers of the forest and its animal inhabitants, to the unique climate found in the tropics. We begin to explore some of the conservation issues surrounding the destruction of rainforest habitats.

 

Art

In our still life topic the children will revisit their still life skills, creating a variety of pieces influenced by different artists and using a range of mediums. They will use charcoal, pencil and paint to depict their chosen composition of special objects before using them to construct a memory box to showcase their work.

 

Music            

We will be learning about the Brazilian Samba and creating a rainforest soundscape. We will be focusing on rhythm, tempo and timbre using percussion, and music technology working on group compositions.

 

Computing

Web Page Creation – The children will be introduced to creating websites for a chosen purpose. They will learn to identify what makes a good web page and use this information to design and evaluate their own website using Google Sites. Throughout the process, the children will pay specific attention to copyright and fair use of media.

Spreadsheets The children will be supported in organising data into columns and rows to create their own data set. They will be taught the importance of formatting data to support calculations, while also being introduced to formulas and will begin to understand how they can be used to produce calculated data.

 

Design Technology (DT)                 

The children will work on mechanical systems: Automata Toys. Using woodworking materials and skills, pupils will construct a window display using an automata mechanism; measuring and cutting their materials, assembling the frame, choosing cams, designing the characters that sit on the followers and finish with a foreground and background.

 

Physical Education (PE)               

In Gymnastics the children will demonstrate accuracy, consistency and clarity of movement. They will arrange their own apparatus to enhance their work and vary compositional ideas on and off the apparatus.

In Dance, the children will work collaboratively to include more complex compositional ideas. They will talk about different styles of dance with understanding, using appropriate language and terminology.

 

French         

We will be learning key vocabulary and phrases through the following topics: Ma journée and Les transports.

 

Religious Education (RE)                

We will learn about Sikh teachings and life as well as discover information about the Gurdwara and Guru Granth Sahib.

 

Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) / Relationships & Sex Education (RSE)

In Belonging to a Community we will be learning how to differentiate between prejudice and discrimination and how to recognise and challenge stereotypes in different contexts.

In Media Literacy and Digital Resilience we will be discussing the benefits of safe internet use; the reasons people choose to communicate through social media and why some media and online content is not appropriate for children.

In Money & Work we will be looking at the role money plays in people’s lives, attitudes towards it and what influences decisions about money. We will discuss the common risks associated with money, including debt, fraud and gambling.

 

 

Please note the following events and add them to your diary:

  • Open Evening – week beginning 7th February 2022.
  • Half Term break - Monday 14th to Friday 18th February 2022.

 

Reminders:

  • Your child should read for at least 10 minutes every day. Across the week, this should be a combination of independent reading and reading to an adult. Please talk to your child about the book and check their understanding by asking questions about events and the characters’ actions. Please also explain new or unfamiliar vocabulary. Their bookbag should come into school every day.
  • Your child will have PE on Monday and Tuesday. Their PE kit should stay in school in a named draw-string bag.
  • Your child needs to bring in a water bottle every day.
  • The weather is often cold at this time of year and the children will go out to play if there is light rain. It is important that your child has a waterproof coat, gloves, hat and a scarf.
  • We are a Healthy School. Please do not put sweets or chocolate bars in your child’s packed lunch. Please do not send in sweets or other treats when it is your child’s birthday. If you want to celebrate your child’s birthday with their classmates, you could buy the class a book, send in a healthy snack such as boxes of raisins or buy stationery such as a pencil, but due to the impact on the environment, we ask you not to send in plastic toys.
  • If your child will be absent from school, please contact the school office: 020 8850 5486 and leave a message detailing why your child is absent. If your child has had an upset stomach they should remain at home until they have been clear of symptoms for 48 hours. Please try to book medical appointments outside of the school day and note that family holidays will not be authorised.
