Learning at Gordon Primary School is broad with a wide range of engaging experiences that reinforce key concepts in every subject. It is balanced so that children receive a full and rich curriculum containing all subjects, and implemented well so that children remember in the long term the information and skills they have been taught. We place priority on the children’s personal, social and emotional development because we know this is key to a successful school career and life in general. Our curriculum is designed to engage and meet the needs of all children and enables them to achieve success in all subjects.

Spring Term 2026 Learning

This term we will be working on the following topics:

English

Our focus texts will be Tell me a dragon by Jackie Morris, Little People, Big Dreams: Amelia Earhart by Isabel Sanchez Vegara and Look up by Nathan Bryon. We will be exploring the texts in detail and developing the skills to write a non-chronological report and fact files. We will continue to focus on adjectives, verbs, adverbs and sentence structure, including the use of conjunctions to join simple sentences.

When reading, we will develop our comprehension of a range of texts.

Maths

We will be using the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics) to support our mathematical learning. Pupils will develop their understanding of multiplication by grouping objects and representing equal groups using repeated addition and multiplication. They will learn to identify the parts of a multiplication equation and apply this knowledge to calculate products. Pupils will explore the two-, five- and ten-times tables, including their relationships, and use doubling and halving strategies to solve problems efficiently.

Science

We will be studying two science topics this term. In Animals including Humans we will learn that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults. We will find out about the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival. We will learn about the importance for humans of exercise, eat the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene. In Plants we will continue learning about the conditions required for planting and growing bulbs and make observations of these over time.

History

Our focus this term is How did we learn to fly? We will be exploring the important events surrounding the history of flight and how these events changed the lives of others. We will use primary sources to find out about people and events in the past.

Geography

Our focus this term is Why is our World Wonderful? We will be learning how to identify and locate characteristics of the UK on a map, identifying human and physical features. We will be naming and locating the five oceans and learn the difference between an ocean and a sea. Use an aerial photograph to draw a simple sketch map. We will be collecting data by sketching findings on a map and completing a tally chart.

Art

We will be exploring collage and sculpturing to create a mixed media piece linked to our work on Dragons.

Music

We will be looking at Sea Shanties and Soundscapes. We will be learning about texture, structure and dynamics and using this within listening, composition and music technology. Recorders will run alongside this topic learning so that we continue to build on what we learnt last term.

Computing

Working in Scratch Junior, the children will learn that a sequence of commands has an outcome. They will modify designs to create their own quiz questions in ScratchJr.

PE

Sending and Receiving - We will be developing our sending and receiving skills including throwing and catching, rolling, kicking, tracking and stopping a ball.

RE

We will explore the role of leaders, teachers and followers in different religions. They will learn how religious leaders and teachers guide others, how followers live out their beliefs, and why these roles are important within faith communities. Pupils will reflect on how leadership and guidance influence beliefs, actions and community life.

PSHE/RSE

Our topics this term are: Belonging to a Community which explores being a part of different groups and the role we play in those groups and about our different rights and responsibilities we have within school and the wider community. We also look at the topic Media Literacy and Digital Resilience which covers: the internet in everyday life; online content and information. Finally, we look at Money and Work which covers what money is, how we get money, keep it safe and ways in which we can spend it. We also look at the difference between needs and wants.

General Information

  • Your child needs to bring in a labelled water bottle every day.
  • The weather is beginning to get wet at this time of year. It is important that your child has a raincoat.
  • Children need to read every day.  This could include an adult reading to them and also the child reading to the adult. We expect to see three comments a week in the child's reading record book. Comments can include how many pages they have read, what they are enjoying about the story, predictions etc. Parents need to check and sign the record book at least once a week. Reading records will be collected every Monday.
  • Both classes will have PE on Tuesday and Friday. Children can come to school wearing their PE kits on these days.
  • We are a Healthy School. Please do not put sweets or chocolate bars in your child’s packed lunch. Please do not send in sweets or other treats when it is your child’s birthday. If you want to celebrate your child’s birthday with their classmates, you could buy the class a book, send in a healthy snack such as boxes of raisins or buy stationery such as a pencil, but due to the impact on the environment, we ask you not to send in plastic toys.
